Shakespeare Remix is Epic’s in-depth after-school arts-in-education program.  In Shakespeare Remix, students are led through a demanding three-month process where they read, analyze, interpret/adapt, rehearse and perform a play written by William Shakespeare.  Epic holds the program at four NYC Public High Schools: Chelsea High School in Lower Manhattan, Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts in Harlem, Frances Perkins Academy at Automotive High School in Brooklyn and the Bronx High School for Writing and Communication Arts.

This program culminates with students performing alongside professional theatre artists in full production of a newly conceived Shakespeare play at an Off-Broadway theatre.  Participating students rigorously debate the critical social and political questions of the play; they decode the meaning of Shakespeare’s text; they weave their own writing into the fabric of the script, and they work with their Epic mentors to rehearse and perform this production.  Notably, their mentors are the same artists who act, direct and design in Epic’s Off-Broadway season.  As a result of this professional mentorship, Shakespeare Remix students speak Shakespearean text with meaning, with truth and with courage and they are also bridging these plays to their time with their own words.

Epic’s Shakespeare Remix is supported in part The National Endowment for the Arts, The New York State Council on the Arts, the Meringoff Family Foundation, NYC Division of Cultural Affairs, Axe-Houghton Foundation, Michael Tuch Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies.
